The positive changes in the world begin with the community. And nowhere is that change more likely to occur than with the students who are going to be the leaders of those communities in the near future. The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce in Shelton, Connecticut, is highly involved in supporting students achieve their goals. One of their most outreaching forms of support is through the administrating of scholarships to students who are graduating from Highs Schools of the Valley regions of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton, or Emmett O'Brian Vocational Technical School. The Chamber of Commerce is partnered together with The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, which is a philanthropic intuitions that was established in 1929 as the community's permanent charitable endowment. The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is among the oldest and largest 650 community foundations in the United States. For more than three generations, thousands of donors have built their community endowment by establishing permanent funds or making gifts to existing funds that distribute grants to broad variety of issues and organizations. The mission at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is to inspire people to get involved in their local issues, while making a positive and substantial change. That mission of positive and substantial change is something that the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce is part of. The Greater Valley Chamber administrates three specific scholarship funds, The Herman & Bess Glazer Scholarship Fund, The Gerald K. & Helen Bogen Fund, and the Julia B. DeCapua Fund. The Herman & Bess Glazer Scholarship Fund Application deadline: March 27, 2015 Est. 1984 to invest in the academic future of one male and one female student graduating from any one of the following schools: Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton High Schools or Emmett O’Brien Vocational Technical School. Scholarships are awarded to those most in need of financial aid to assist their pursuing studies beyond the secondary school level to an accredited junior and senior college. Julia B. DeCapua Fund Application deadline: March 27, 2015 Est. 1996 to be awarded annually to student(s) from Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Oxford, Seymour or Shelton who are pursuing teaching as a vocation. Additional scholarship criteria include financial need and academic ability. Gerald J. & Helen B. Bogen Scholarship Fund Application deadline: March 27, 2015 Est. 1984 to invest in the academic future of one male and one female student graduating from any one of the following schools: Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton High Schools or Emmett O’Brien Vocational Technical School. Scholarships are awarded based on academic ability, financial need, and particularly those who have demonstrated good citizenship and an interest in their community during their high school years.
