Hi Chamber Members! It’s Emine Gul Demir, your Spring 2021 intern from Southern Connecticut State University. I am a senior journalism major with a sociology cognate. I was born at Yale Hospital and have been residing in New Haven, CT. About 25 years ago my parents came to the United States from Turkey. My father has owned a few businesses over the past years. I have gained some knowledge on how the business world works over the years. I am ambitious to work with the businesses in The Valley to gain more experience. My college experience includes contributing to Southern News with campus related articles. Also, in 2016 I had an internship at an English newspaper in Turkey. I chose journalism because I believe it is important to inform the public with factual information. Last fall SCSU journalism students had the opportunity to pair up with nonprofits in the area to experience hands on public relations. I was paired with the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce. While working with the Chamber I realized I had an interest in public relations. I met with several Chamber members and experienced working with clients firsthand, and it was a great feeling. Informing the public about a cause or nonprofit and raising awareness for the audience to see was exciting. This semester I am working closer with the Chamber and I am eager to expand my experience with this opportunity. Nancie and I are currently working on a project creating a talk show for the Chamber on public access. I am very excited about this project. I enjoy interviewing people and hearing their experience and stories. Through this internship I will gain valuable work experience and professional feedback. The skills I will learn from this internship along with journalism skills I have acquired through my four years at SCSU, I will be ready for a full-time job.
